Update Ports Of Auckland

Ports of Auckland (PoA) management has delayed plans to dismiss wharfies and engage private contractors on its waterfront.

These were terms of a temporary agreement between PoA and the Maritime Union of New Zealand (MUNZ) allowing for the feuding parties to participate in a Judicial Settlement Conference.

This voluntary conference is set down for 11am local time, on Monday in Auckland.

Both parties participated in a telephone hook-up with Judge BS Travis of the NZ Employment Court yesterday afternoon and agreed to the truce.

The aim of the conference will be to resolve the dispute before a formal hearing begins in the NZ Employment Court on March 26.

Under the terms of the arrangement, jobs ads for the two independent contract companies (Drake Personnel and Allied Workforce) will still be published or be cancelled at MUNZ’s cost.

Judge Travis praised both parties for agreeing to use the conference as a means of resolving their dispute.

The conference will be held behind closed doors, with no media admitted.
