Strong Growth Forecast For North European Box Ports

A new report from UK-based Ocean Shipping Consultants says north European container ports bounced back strongly from the economic downturn to reach 57.9m teu in 2011, a 22% increase over recession year 2009, with the eastern Baltic seeing strong growth.

In its north Europe forecasts - with economic cases defined in a range from base case, enhanced recovery and continued-instability.

OSC sees gateway demand growing between 41%-59% over the period 2011-2020, to between 60.1m-67.8m teu, and by 16%-21% to 69.5m-81.9m teu in 2025.

Report author Isabelle Griffith says transhipment demand is increasing, primarily due to the recovery of the Russian market, which is served by feeders from the major northern range European box hubs.

“It is a volatile region, but Russia’s economy - the largest in the region - is now more stable than it used to be in the past, while Poland has also been growing strongly.”

Container throughputs grew most rapidly in the eastern Baltic, which saw a 395% increase in the decade to 2011 to 4.9m teu, which represents a 79% rise in the five years to 201
