This followed the withdrawal of a lockout notice issued by port management last week.

After hearings in the Employment Court last Friday, PoA committed to returning to negotiations with MUNZ and halting proposals to contract out stevedoring work.

ITF president Paddy Crumlin said it was a victory for common sense.

“It reinforces the fact that these 1998 Patrick-style assaults on workers’ rights and organised labour won¹t be successful,” he said.
“It’s a victory for MUNZ, the MUA and dockworkers around the world who have refused to bow to POAL’s demands.”

The ITF also said it was concerned by a statement from PoA chief executive Tony Gibson which, Mr Crumlin said, questioned the productivity of MUNZ workers.

Last week Mr Gibson said the company hasn’t changed getting a modern and efficient port, “and that is what we will be talking to MUNZ about.
