The figure was still slightly down on March, however, when $20.8bn was reported.
A significant contributor was the ‘food and live animals’ category which was valued at $774m in May, compared with $712m in April and $719m in March.
Machinery and transport equipment imports were valued at $8.18bn, up on the figure of $7.5bn in April, albeit still slightly down on the figure of $8.62bn recorded in March.
Mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials were up to $3.75bn compared with $3.25bn in April and $3.9bn in March.
Chemicals and related products were up to $2.09bn which was an increase on the April result of $1.9bn but a decrease when compared with $2.21bn in March.
