Hobart Waterfront

Infrastructure minister Anthony Albanese has announced a $50m deal with the Tasmanian Government for the remediation of Macquarie Point rail-yards on the Hobart waterfront.

The remediation of the 8.4 hectare site is aimed at improving the site’s cultural and tourism potential.

“The redevelopment of the Brooke Street Pier support structure is another key component of this project,” Mr Albanese said.

“The redeveloped Pier will be important for future vessel berthing as well as local ferry and cruise services.

“Both projects have the power to expand not only Hobart’s economy but also its liveability.”

Mr Albanese said the $50m deal follows a recent grant from the Liveable Cities program to help fund planning groundwork.

While the Hobart port is rarely used for commercial trade, it is important for cruise shipping and maritime expeditions to the South Pole and Antarctica.
