Global Box Movements Are On The Rise

Container exports climbed to 9.28m teu in February from 8.83m teu in the previous corresponding period and 10m teu in January 2012. Total container exports so far this year is 19.3m teu which is about 10m less than the tally in the first quarter of 2011.

Container volumes shipped from Australasia and Oceania also rose for a second month, up 7% from February 2011 to 173,600 teu and 165,400 in January 2012.

Meanwhile, exports from Asia jumped 16% to 2.8m teu taking the total so far this year to almost 4m teu, and shipments from the Indian subcontinent and the Middle East combined 8.9% to 607,500 teu. Container exports from this region were 627,200 teu in January, CTS said.

In other regions, container exports from Europe increased to 1.289m teu in February from 1.18m teu in the previous year while down from January’s volumes of 1.294m teu. North America shipped 1.89m teu, an 11% increase from February 2011 and a rise from the 1.163m teu recorded in January this year
