Port of Melbourne chief executive Stephen Bradford told a Shipping Australia lunch that although any damage was unlikely, the quake had triggered “a channel deepening event”.
“The earthquake triggered an environmental requirement to re-survey the bund in the northern Dredged Material Ground (DMG),” Mr Bradford said.
“That is underway and we have to do that within 14 days.
“We don’t suspect there is any issue.”
The northern DMG is about 16km out into the Bay off the Melbourne bayside suburb of Mordialloc.
The quake measured 5.3 on the Richter scale and centred on the La Trobe Valley east of Melbourne, though it also was felt many kilometres to the north and west of the Victorian capital.
There were no reports of significant damage to infrastructure or injuries to any people.
